Building Myanmar's resilience through strategic reforestation and soil restoration

🌱 How Forever Green Myanmar Fights Soil Erosion and Land Degradation

1. Understanding the Root Cause

Myanmar is facing a silent crisis: widespread land degradation, particularly in the Central Dry Zone, is threatening agriculture, water resources, and livelihoods. Key drivers include:

  • Water erosion (affecting ~72% of the region)
  • Wind erosion
  • Soil fertility loss
  • Salinization and alkalinization
  • Overgrazing and unsustainable farming on steep slopes

Many of these are the result of decades of human-driven land exploitation: deforestation, uncontrolled livestock grazing, and poorly planned agriculture.

2. FGM's Long-Term Solution: Regenerative Reforestation

Forever Green Myanmar is not treating the symptoms β€” we are addressing the cause.

We are deploying a long-term ecological restoration strategy centered around the Paulownia Tree, a powerful ally in the fight against soil erosion:

  • Fast-growing and deep-rooted, it holds soil firmly in place.
  • Restores soil fertility and improves moisture retention.
  • Naturally rebuilds topsoil lost to rill, sheet, and gully erosion.
  • Helps buffer against wind and water erosion on degraded slopes.
  • Serves as a sustainable agroforestry crop with economic value.

3. Integrated Approach to Restoration

FGM works with NGOs, local farmers, and communities to implement:

  • Erosion-prone zone mapping using soil and topographic data.
  • Agroecological planning to reduce expansion into steep slopes.
  • Community-managed reforestation of degraded lands.
  • Pilot sites in the Central Dry Zone to monitor success using GIS and field data.
  • Advocacy for better data collection and funding for long-term monitoring.

4. Our Mission is Clear

"To rebuild Myanmar's land, protect its people, and secure its future β€” one tree, one village, one watershed at a time."

With proper planning, scientific reforestation, and the deep-rooted Paulownia Tree, we believe that soil can be restored, erosion stopped, and communities protected β€” for good.
